Infra-Red Thermometers
Infra-Red Thermometers are sometimes called laser or laser gun thermometers. Infra-red is often abreviated to I/R. They work by reading the infra-red radiation (that is emitted by everything), converting this to a temperature value and displaying it on the screen.
They are used because they are quick. You point the unit at the item you want to take the temperature of, pull the trigger and the temperature is displayed within 1 second.
They are widely used in the food industry ("all" of the major supermarkets and food manufacturers use them) because they are an almost instant display of temperature, but a food business also needs to have a digital probe thermometer as a back up - eg: if the infra-red thermometer shows that the temperature of the item is too high (eg: if measuring the temp of raw meat in a butchery), then the digital probe thermometer needs to be used to put into the meat to make sure of the actual core temperature.
An infra-red thermometer measures SURFACE TEMPERATURE. It measures the first surface that the infra-red sees ... it will not measure through glass. The red dot that is often used does not measure the temperature, it gives a general idea of where the unit is being pointed.
Infra-red thermometers are used in many, many industries including automotive, aerospace, green keeping, growing/harvesting, plastics, etc etc.
